Project Description
The success of cloud computing is predicated on the ability of cloud service providers to manage their resources in a cost-effective and optimal manner. One of the big challenges in cloud resource management is to efficiently manage storage for hundreds of thousands of virtual servers and applications running inside those virtual machines. The Dynamo project is addressing this challenge by developing an automated management system that manages the entire end-to-end life-cycle of storage for virtual applications, including intelligent provisioning, live-migration of storage from one system to another, support for live-migration of virtual machines and archival/restore of virtual machine images and application storage. Each of these storage operations are optimized to be intelligent in resource consumption and efficient in minimizing manual administrative operations including optimizations like fast provisioning of virtual machines and hot attach/detach of storage to virtual machine instances with data mobility across instances.
